Step It Up! Obtain a Professional Certification

Just graduated? MBA school still years away? Whether you are thinking of graduate school or not, you should definitely look into a professional certification! Human Resource professionals have found tremendous value in obtaining a certification that gives them a greater edge at their job.

Even if you are still a student, you are eligible to obtain a certification!

HR Certification Organizations

There are three main organizations that you should be aware of when it comes to obtaining a professional HR certification. They are the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), the HR Certification Institute (HRCI), and the Associate for Talent Development (ATD).

SHRM introduced their own HR certifications back in 2015. Their certifications stemmed from a three-year study utilizing the SHRM Competency Model and insights of over 35,000 HR professionals. SHRM has been a long-standing HR organization and is recognized by every HR professional around the world.

SHRM currently offers two certifications, the SHRM-CP and the SHRM-SCP

HRCI has been the only organization to offer HR certifications prior to SHRM's introduction of the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP. Despite SHRM's move to create their own, HRCI's certifications are still well-recognized by HR professionals around the world. Approximately 93% of Fortune 500 companies employ HR professionals with certifications from HRCI.

HRCI currently offers the aPHR, PHR, SPHR, and GPHR certifications

ATD is a professional organization focused setting the industry standards around talent development, which is a vital aspect of HR. Individuals who hope to enter an HR career focused on learning & development, or organizational development & change should consider a certification from ATD.

ATD currently offers two certifications, the APTD and CPLP.
